The incident took place around 11 p.m., when police pulled over the car the teen was a passenger in. The car’s driver was on post-release community supervision, and another passenger — also a minor — was on probation. The 17-year-old boy was not subject to a probation search, the San Mateo Police Department said.

Police conducted searches of the driver and the other passenger and did not find anything. But while conducting a pat search on the 17-year-old boy, they found a loaded Glock in his waistband and another gun in his jacket pocket, police said.

Police continued to search the vehicle and said they found high-capacity magazines and a drum magazine in the boy’s possession. The teen was arrested and booked into juvenile detention on several charges, including possession of an unserialized gun and carrying a loaded firearm he did not own in a vehicle.

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Miramontes Point Road and Oleander Way at 5:58 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities did not say if anyone had been struck or injured in the shooting. The suspect fled the scene before authorities arrived, according to the news release.

After investigators, including the county’s Gang Intelligence Unit, began working the case, they identified a San Mateo County man as a suspect.

The 23-year old suspect was arrested Thursday in Gilroy. Detectives executed a search warrant at a nearby home — authorities did not say what led them to the home, or who lived there — and found a “ghost gun,” a personally manufactured weapon that did not bear a serial number. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm, child endangerment, criminal threats and reckless discharge of a firearm.

The sheriff’s office said in the release that detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no public safety concern. Authorities did not specify a reason for the child endangerment booking charge.

East Palo Alto police officer shot during struggle with suspect https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/13/east-palo-alto-police-officer-shot-during-struggle-with-suspect/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/13/east-palo-alto-police-officer-shot-during-struggle-with-suspect/#respond Fri, 13 Jan 2023 16:04:53 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/?p=8715679&preview=true&preview_id=8715679 An East Palo Alto police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries in a shooting late Thursday night, the department said Friday morning.

Officers made a traffic stop in the area of Fordham Street and Purdue Avenue just after 11 p.m. Thursday, the East Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release. The vehicle’s driver fled on foot; the officers chased him to the 2700 block of Fordham.

As police struggled to get the suspect in custody, the suspect fired a single shot from a fully automatic “ghost gun” containing a high-capacity magazine, authorities said. The shot struck an officer — a five-year veteran of the department — who suffered injuries to a lower extremity.

The suspect was arrested and the firearm was recovered by police. Authorities said officers did not fire any shots during the incident.

“We are grateful that our officer was not more seriously injured, and that the suspect and firearm are in custody,” East Palo Alto Interim Police Chief Jeff Liu said in the release. “This is a stark reminder of the danger police officers face, and the ongoing dangers of gun violence. We must never forget the risk our police officers take every time they leave their families to serve our community.”

Just before 9:45 a.m., officers were called to the 200 block of Gateway Drive for a report of a stolen vehicle, the Pacifica Police Department said in a statement. Officers spotted the driver as he was leaving an apartment complex parking lot and tried to stop him.

Police said the driver did not pull over and led officers in a pursuit. The chase ended after he hit a guardrail and came to a stop on the southbound Interstate 280 off-ramp to Serramonte Boulevard.

Officers told the driver and his passenger to get out of the vehicle, but they did not comply, police said. After 50 minutes of negotiations, the driver finally emerged and was arrested.

Police said the passenger was found inside the vehicle and taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The driver was booked into San Mateo County jail on charges of buying or receiving a stolen vehicle as well as evading a peace officer and causing injury to another person. Police said he was on probation for a previous auto theft conviction.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact the police department at 650-738-7314.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office later identified the person as 25-year-old Maycarla Sulapas, of South San Francisco.

Authorities say correctional staff witnessed Sulapas experiencing the unspecified emergency in the intake and booking area of the jail at 3:17 p.m., shortly after she was booked into the facility. She was taken to the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m.

Authorities did not release a preliminary cause of death, nor the reason for her incarceration. The San Mateo County district attorney’s office will lead the investigation and conduct an independent review of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Dharmesh A. Patel, 41, of Pasadena, was formally booked Tuesday on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse offenses, according to the California Highway Patrol. But Patel remained in the hospital Wednesday, and the CHP said he would be transferred to a San Mateo County jail facility upon being discharged.

The specific conditions of the woman and two children in the vehicle — which plunged 250 feet before landing on rocks below — have not been disclosed, but CHP Officer Mark Andrews said Wednesday that they and Patel “remain in serious but stable condition.” All of the occupants were reportedly conscious and alert when they were reached by rescuers.

In the wake of the crash, the CHP said investigators “developed probable cause to believe the incident was an intentional act” after interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence at the crash site. District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said a case has not yet been presented to his office for evaluation of criminal charges, due in part to Patel still being under medical care.

While the CHP did not disclose the relationship between Patel and the other people in the car, the hospital where he works, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, said in a statement that he was with his family. A law-enforcement source confirmed that they were Patel’s wife and two young children.

“Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is deeply saddened to learn of a traffic incident involving one of our physicians and his family,” the statement reads. “We are extremely grateful there were no severe injuries. We will not respond further, as this incident is under investigation.”

Patel specializes in radiology. Public records show that in addition to his Southern California home, he has had listed residences on the Peninsula and in the East Bay over the past decade.

The crash was reported around 10:50 a.m. Monday along Highway 1 just south of the Tom Lantos Tunnels. Responding officers arrived to find a white Tesla sedan 250 to 300 feet below the roadway. The spot where the vehicle went off the road did not have a guardrail.

One witness said the Tesla was headed south when it swerved and went over the cliff, said Cecile Juliette, a spokesperson for Cal Fire San Mateo, one of the agencies called to the scene.

Brian Pottenger, a battalion chief for Coastside Fire Protection District/Cal Fire, told The Associated Press that firefighters watching the sedan through binoculars spotted movement inside the mangled wreck, spurring an hours-long rescue operation in the face of heavy rain, winds and ocean waves. Because the doors were smashed against the cliff, firefighters had to pry the vehicle open to extract the survivors.

Rescuers used ropes and rescue baskets to bring the children to the top of the cliff before helicopters arrived and pulled up the adults. All four were then taken to a hospital.

High-profile crashes involving Tesla vehicles often raise questions about the role that driver assistance features might have played, but the CHP was quick to refute that idea.

“There has been no determination as to what driving mode the Tesla was in,” the CHP said in a news release. “However, that does not appear to be a contributing factor in this incident.”

The news of Patel’s arrest evoked memories of an infamous 2018 crash in Mendocino County that killed five children and two adults. Authorities determined after an investigation and inquest that a married couple from Washington, Jennifer and Sarah Hart, had died by suicide and killed their six adopted children in the crash.

The Devil’s Slide crash remains under investigation; anyone with information for the CHP San Francisco area office can call 415-557-1094.

The woman’s body has not been found.

John Caisiano Thompson, 44, is suspected of killing East Palo Alto resident Breanna Labat and disposing of her body, police said Friday.

A missing persons investigation was launched Dec. 6, though information provided early in the investigation led authorities to believe Labat was murdered, interim Chief Jeff Liu said in a news release.

Thompson was expected to be formally charged and arraigned Friday afternoon, Liu said in the release.

Police did not specify an alleged motive for the killing, nor did they reveal why they had focused on and arrested Thompson.

Labat’s body was yet to be located as of Friday afternoon. The alleged homicide would be East Palo Alto’s fifth of 2022.

Those with information is asked to call Acting Commander Angel Sanchez at 650-853-3154.

Around 12:40 p.m., officers found an occupied stolen car at the intersection of King and Radburn drives in South San Francisco, according to the South San Francisco Police Department.

Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver intentionally rammed a police vehicle and drove away, police said. They pursued the driver but called off the chase a short time later due to his alleged reckless driving.

Roughly two hours later, officers found the driver and the stolen car in the 200 block of South Airport Boulevard, according to police. Officers chased after the driver again, but ended the pursuit when he started driving the wrong way on city streets.

The teen continued to drive recklessly for another three quarters of a mile and crashed into other cars near the San Francisco International Airport, police said. He tried to run away but was caught a short distance later. Meanwhile, two people in the cars he hit were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The teen was arrested and booked into Hillcrest Juvenile Hall in San Mateo on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, felony reckless evading, evading an officer by driving opposite of traffic and receiving stolen property, according to police.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact the police department at 650-877-8900.
