A woman at Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City died Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency while being booked into the jail, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office later identified the person as 25-year-old Maycarla Sulapas, of South San Francisco.

Authorities say correctional staff witnessed Sulapas experiencing the unspecified emergency in the intake and booking area of the jail at 3:17 p.m., shortly after she was booked into the facility. She was taken to the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m.

Authorities did not release a preliminary cause of death, nor the reason for her incarceration. The San Mateo County district attorney’s office will lead the investigation and conduct an independent review of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
