Q: Did I miss the gas price contest winner announcement?

Teresa Smith

A: I printed the two winners’ names a few weeks ago after each correctly guessed $5.42/gallon on Nov. 15. Today we learn more about them.

Q: That’s fantastic! I actually won a contest!

It’s mostly luck. When I submitted my guess, the gas price at my neighborhood gas station was $5.59. I figured that the price would trend down slightly.

I drive a Toyota Tacoma. I handled higher gas prices by cutting down on driving and walking a lot more. At times I would walk several miles to the grocery store.

Thank you for the contest and was I lucky to have won! It makes my day. Keep up the good work.

Choon Lee, Palo Alto

A: I applaud you for walking to cut your gas use. Congratulations, again, and keep on walking.

Q: Thank you for this contest. I’m excited to be a winner. I am retired and my husband and I live at The Forum, a retirement community in Cupertino. At least two dozen residents who live here noticed that I was a winner in your contest.

To come up with $5.42, I studied the current prices at that time and realized that prices were inching down. I thought about how much they would fall, and to be honest, I used my birth year (42) for my answer.

My vehicle is a 2000 Toyota Avalon. We have two cars, but we’ll probably sell one within the next year because we don’t drive as much anymore. Therefore, high gas prices haven’t affected us much.

We’re both 80 years old and celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary last September. We feel fortunate to be in good health and have good mobility. Our anniversary gift to each other is a trip to Africa for three weeks, where we’ll take safaris in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe while traveling with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT).

Thanks again for reimbursing me for a tank of gas.

Dee Gustavson, Cupertino

A: Congratulations, again, to you, too. Happy anniversary, and enjoy the trip.

Q: I’ve had a Real ID Driver’s License for several years. It expires in five months. My understanding is that a person can renew a Real ID up to six months in advance. When I try to renew online, I get an error message, “Eligibility Record Not Found.” Next steps?

David Yell

A: You can renew your REAL ID up to 90 days before the expiration date. There are some cases where a renewal must be processed at a DMV field office, such as changing a name or gender identity. If you are unable to renew online, contact DMV customer service at 1-800-777-0133.
