CalTrain began offering the free, commemorative ride honoring the life and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1980s. The ride also pays tribute to the 54-mile civil rights protest march activists endured in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

The trip is also Bay Area transit’s homage to the Freedom Train, a three-mile procession Coretta Scott King, King’s late wife, organized in the form of 300 activists marching from Memphis, Tennessee, following King Jr.’s memorial services on May 2, 1968, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The mules and wagons of that first caravan of King’s Poor People’s Campaign drew attention to the injustices of tenant farming, sharecropping and the plantation economy. Marchers then boarded buses en route to Marks, Mississippi. Public transportation agencies nationwide still offer free rides annually to observe the occasion.

CalTrain’s rolling jubilee unfolded as the train departed from Diridon around 9:30 a.m., continued as it stopped in Palo Alto and San Mateo near 9:50 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. respectively and concluded in San Francisco close to 10:45 a.m. on Jan. 16.

The ride was suspended three years ago as the coronavirus pandemic upended public life. But previous rumors of its demise turned out to be exaggerated when this news organization reported the tradition’s finale in 2015. While CalTrain did not offer a special southbound service on the holiday this year, it did accept Celebration Train tickets on southbound trains departing San Francisco after 1 p.m.

National Weather Service forecasters expect storm to dump several more inches of rain, create more flooding concerns and bring winds that are expected to fell trees and power lines. The storm is the latest in a series of them that have been powered by an atmospheric river.

According to Gov. Gavin Newsom, 12 people have died in storms across the state. On Sunday, President Biden declared a disaster in California, making the state eligible for federal aid.

Live look: Bomb cyclone thrashes Northern California, downs power and trees https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/04/live-look-bomb-cyclone-thrashes-northern-california-downs-power-and-trees/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/04/live-look-bomb-cyclone-thrashes-northern-california-downs-power-and-trees/#respond Wed, 04 Jan 2023 21:58:18 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/?p=8705983&preview=true&preview_id=8705983 As the Bay Area braced itself Wednesday morning for a “bomb cyclone” approaching the region, parts of Northern California began enduring the worst of the storm.

By noon, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over the extreme weather event while public safety workers across Sonoma County were ramping up their response to reports of downed power lines and trees. Outages affecting up to 17,000 residents were also reported in downtown San Jose.

This latest storm is an atmospheric river, essentially a giant conveyor belt of water in the sky and moisture-rich maelstrom rolling in from the Pacific Ocean to fill California’s reservoirs and blanket the Sierra Nevada with snow, which has the potential to cause catastrophic flooding and mudslides.

By the scale used to measure the strength and impact of such weather systems, this torrent is a Category 3 out of 5. The scale meteorologists use bases the five categories of intensity on the duration of the tempest and the magnitude of water content called the Integrated Water Vapor Transport (IVT).

Wednesday’s atmospheric river is also being labeled a “bomb cyclone” for its rapid strengthening off-shore. That term describes an area of low pressure that intensified by 24 millibars within 24 hours, with millibars being a unit of measurement for atmospheric pressure.

Grounded from lofty definitions and weather science meanwhile are the residents grappling with surviving the wind-whipped deluge. Below are photos documenting their experiences. While we encourage your safest preparation and response to this emergency, if you have any visuals to share, please email photovideo@bayareanewsgroup.com.

The powerful and poignant images recorded our losses – from wildfires and shootings to COVID and abortion rights – and our gains, in sports arenas, playing fields and parades. There were deaths and funerals and festivals that documented the sorrow of the year and also the elation.

The astonishing and the sublime also were captured – sometimes in the same frame. Such was the retirement of a 100-year-old park ranger.

The Bay Area’s beauty is on full display – the sunsets, the salt ponds, the fog and snow. A stunning supermoon, the last of the year, rose behind the Golden Gate Bridge.

We present 2022, through the eyes of Bay Area News Group photographers.

Christian Pulisic scored while crashing headfirst into the goalkeeper in the 38th minute in a politically charged rematch of their famous meeting a quarter-century ago.

Pulisic sprawled on the field and was lying in the goal for about three minutes as he received treatment from the U.S. staff. He re-entered the game but was replaced at the start of the second half.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the U.S. opened with draws against Wales and England and needed a victory to move on to the round of 16. Iran finished third with three points. The team has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearances.

The U.S. outshot Iran 9-0 in the first half but didn’t break through until Pulisic came up with the big moment that a growing and increasingly demanding fan base back home had been pining for.

“I always say it’s us against the world,” forward Tim Weah said. “No one believed the U.S. could play good football.”

“Every day, through your life’s work and your example, you make America stronger,” she told the crowd. “On Veterans Day, we come together to express our profound gratitude for all you have done and you continue to do.”

Harris said the nation owes soldiers a great debt, and that the Biden administration was working to deliver on help with housing, health care and jobs. She noted Jill Biden’s work with the families of veterans, saying “while our veterans wore the uniform, they’re not the only ones who have served.”

“As Americans, we have a sacred obligation to take care of our veterans and our military families,” she said. “Fulfilling that obligation means making sure veterans can access the support and resources they need to thrive.”

In the Bay Area, residents gathered Friday for parades in Antioch and San Jose.

In East Contra Costa, Deer Valley and Liberty High School marching bands performed as a group of veterans led by J.R. Wilson of the local Delta Veterans Group proceeded down Antioch’s Second Street.

Meanwhile, in the South Bay, San Jose marked its 104th celebration with a procession that marched from SAP Center to the intersection of Market and San Carlos streets. Among those who participated are members of the Welcome Home “Doughboys” group, which pays tribute to World War I veterans.

“That was crazy,” said Barret, 70, of San Jose and now retired. Unlike her teaching days, Barret’s trips to the zoo now involve no kids.

The Senior Safari program at the park, which drew about 500 people Thursday, aims to combat social isolation by getting older adults out to the park for a fun day of zoo tours, animal meet-and-greets, amusement rides and other activities. The event is hosted an hour before the zoo opens to the public and invites seniors (age 50-plus) to the park on the fourth Thursday of every month from May through October.

“I enjoy seeing the animals and it’s usually not as crowded in the morning. It’s a nice park to walk around,” Barret said as she pet the pygmy goat. “This has been fun; this is the best part,” she said of the petting zoo.

Caitlin O’Hara, communications manager at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, said the Senior Safari is also about encouraging older folks in the community to come out, be social and get some exercise.

“We met some people today who had never been here before, so we’re encouraging that section of the community that may not otherwise come if they don’t have kids or grandkids at the proper age anymore,” O’hara said, adding that Santa Clara County officials also show up and set up resource tables to share information with the seniors. “We encourage them to come to the zoo to make use of this great community asset that we have here.”

The idea for the Safari came from discussions zoo officials had with the San Jose Rotary Club and visitors who said that San Jose needed more safe places for seniors to get out and be social, according to Heather Lerner, former executive director of the Happy Hollow Foundation.

The next Senior Safari will be Oct. 27. Admission and parking for seniors are free that day, according to the Happy Hollow & Zoo website.

“It’s unbelievable — and they’re all so nice. They’re very, very thoughtful and kind,” Migeulgorry said of the dozens of volunteers who helped, adding that he initially joked with the project organizers that it would take that many folks to complete the work his house needed before they assured him that’s exactly how many people would show up.

Migeulgorry, 79, grew up in the house in the 800 block of Sixth Street, which is now valued above $1 million. He said his parents moved in to the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house shortly after it was built in 1939 and that generations of Migeulgorry have lived in it since at least the late 1940s. He joined the Army in 1967, served in Vietnam in ’68 and returned home the following year.

“I’m at a loss for words. This is probably the best day of my life and the repairs that were made are more than I could ever imagine,” Miguelgorry said.

The work on Migeulgorry’s home was one of three renovations the organizations agreed to complete for veterans across Santa Clara County on Tuesday — one more in San Jose and another in Morgan Hill. For Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley, which has assisted county residents with no-cost home repairs since 1991, this is one of about 300 similar renovations the nonprofit will complete this year.

To Deanne Everton, executive director at Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley, the work is about more than transforming Migeulgorry’s home into an asset for the community.

“Having a safe home is a right for everyone and being able to preserve that for a vulnerable group within our community is so important,” Everton said. “For John today, seeing the joy on his face and one of his quotes was, ‘I think this might be the best day of my life.’ So, not a bad day at work.”

The repairs completed Tuesday would have cost an estimated $90,000, but the labor and materials were donated by Lowe’s. They included exterior vinyl board and skirt replacements and landscaping, such as laying bark near plants to beautify Migeulgorry’s yard.

The three home renovations for Santa Clara County veterans are part of a national initiative by Lowe’s to support vets and their families this fall. The home improvement retailer donated $3.3 million to that effort, which funded the renovation of 79 homes nationwide.

Taking place just days after an execution-style killing in Dublin spurred a manhunt for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputy suspected of the shooting, school officials highlighted the importance of teaching students and staff awareness and how to react if there is a critical situation on campus.

“The purpose of this drill is to educate our students and staff about how to create the safest possible environment in case of an emergency,” said Maureen Byrne, Dublin High School’s principal, in a statement.

“In preparation for this drill, our students will review concepts related to the run/hide/defend strategy used by school districts across the country before practicing hide and barricade techniques. We appreciate all of the hard work from our staff, as well as the Dublin Police Department, in organizing this drill for our school,” she continued.

Dublin Unified School District officials said they work with law enforcement to ensure that if there is a shooter or other emergency on a school campus, the appropriate agency is familiar with the school’s procedures and the campus layout, and has access.

The district’s annual drills have previously included the FBI and Alameda County Fire Department working alongside Dublin police.

In fact, according to voter data firm Political Data Inc., 18.8 million of the 21.9 million ballots mailed out — 86% — have yet to be returned.

Ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day, June 7, so no later than Tuesday you have to get it into the mailbox before the carrier comes or to the post office before it closes. It must be received by June 14. Postage is covered so you don’t need a stamp. But don’t forget to put the ballot into the envelope and sign the envelope before sending it.

Counties have set up drop boxes to collect ballots. The state has an online tool to help you find them, where you can enter your county, city or ZIP code and find drop boxes and other voting locations near you. Ballots must be dropped off in the boxes by 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7.

You can track your ballot online at wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov. The tracking app will send you a text when your ballot is received and counted.
