The nine-player, three-team deal, which also included the Milwaukee Brewers, was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The A’s received a bounty of prospects: left-hander Kyle Muller, outfielder Esteury Ruiz and right-hander pitchers Freddy Tarnok and Royber Salinas. as well as veteran catcher Manny Piña, who played just five games for the Braves in 2022 before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery. The Brewers’ big piece to the deal was catcher William Contreras, 24, from Atlanta. The A’s also sent reliever Joel Payamps to Milwaukee.

The key to the deal for the A’s likely is Muller, 25, who entered last season rated as the Braves’ top prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America. He went 6-8 with a 3.41 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett and went 1-1 with an 8.03 ERA in three starts with Atlanta. The left-hander has gone 3-5 with a 5.14 ERA in 12 career major-league appearances over the past two seasons.

Ruiz, 23, made his major league debut last season with the Brewers after hitting .332 with 16 home runs and 85 stolen bases in the minors in 2022 while playing in the San Diego Padres’ and Brewers’ farm systems. He was part of the package that came to Milwaukee in the deal that sent four-time All-Star closer Josh Hader to San Diego.

Tarnock, 24, made his big league debut in 2022 with the Braves while spending most of the season at Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi. Salinas, a 21-year-old right-hander, pitched at the Single-A level for the Braves this past season.

In another move, the A’s designated infielder Vimael Machín for assignment.

Murphy, 28, was the American League’s Gold Glove catcher in 2021 and a finalist again last season while being among the A’s most reliable hitters in a historically bad 2022 lineup. The Silver Slugger finalist slashed .250/.332/.426 with 18 home runs and 66 RB last season in 148 games, leading the team in batting average and OPS. Murphy hit 17 home runs with 59 RBI in 2021.

He’ll go from a team expected to again have one of MLB’s worst records to a team trying to contend for a World Series two years after winning the title in 2021. Murphy also will be reunited with former Oakland teammate Matt Olson, who was traded to the Braves last spring and signed an eight-year, $168 million extension with them. In that deal, the A’s got catcher Shae Langeliers, outfielder Cristian Pache and right-handed pitchers Ryan Cusick and Joey Estes.

Murphy, a third-round draft pick by Oakland in 2015, was deemed expendable in part because of his team-friendly contract status. He’s scheduled to earn $725,000 this season and is not eligible for salary arbitration until the offseason. The A’s also have significant catching depth; Langeliers made his big league debut last season and figures to at least share time with Piña behind the plate this season. Recent first-round draft picks Tyler Soderstrom and Daniel Susac are also in the system, and the team is high on Kyle McCann.

There was plenty of trade talk surrounding Murphy this offseason, especially during the just-completed winter meetings. When asked how the team might handle the catching position without Murphy, A’s manager Mark Kotsay said, “We saw Shea limited in September in the role behind the plate. I think he has all the ability to step in and be an everyday Major League catcher.”

“I was really impressed with his game planning, his preparation, how he followed Murph and learned from Murph in the time he was there, and not just Murph, but with (Stephen) Vogt. He soaked in a lot of experience in a short amount of time. But I do think if he ends up being here and Murph is not, we’ll have a lot of support for him in terms of game calling, game planning.

“Can he step in and be the everyday guy? I believe he can, yes.”

With Murphy gone, the A’s most appealing trade candidates probably are outfielder Ramón Laureano and pitcher Paul Blackburn.

Cal’s new offensive coordinator is a familiar face in Berkeley https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/12/07/cals-new-offensive-coordinator-is-a-familiar-face-in-berkeley/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/12/07/cals-new-offensive-coordinator-is-a-familiar-face-in-berkeley/#respond Wed, 07 Dec 2022 13:00:51 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/?p=8682375&preview=true&preview_id=8682375 Cal announced Tuesday night Jake Spavital will return to Berkeley to serve as the Bears offensive coordinator again.

Spavital, 37, was Cal’s offensive coordinator in 2016 when the Bears’ “Air Raid” offense set several school records while ranking fourth in the country in passing offense and 10th in total offense under then head coach Sonny Dykes.

Spavital was fired last week as Texas State’s head coach after a 13-35 record over the past four seasons. Previously, Spavital was the offensive coordinator at West Virginia (2017-18) after leaving Cal.

“Jake is an elite offensive coordinator and recruiter with a terrific record of success in producing top-notch offenses and developing outstanding quarterbacks,” Cal head coach Justin Wilcox said. “We are excited to have Jake return to Cal and lead our staff on the offensive side of the ball.”

Cal fired Bill Musgrave with one game left in this past season while in the middle of a six-game losing streak. Under Musgrave, the Bears were ranked 10th in the Pac-12 in both scoring offense (23.2 points) and total offense (362.1 yards).

As an offensive coordinator, Spavital has piloted offenses on teams that finished in the top 20 in the country in total offense six times, reached seven bowl games, and earned a spot in the AP Top 25 in seven different seasons. He’s recruited and worked with a number of elite college and NFL quarterbacks, including Kyler Murray (Texas A&M), Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) and Geno Smith (West Virginia).

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for the culture Justin Wilcox and his staff have created at Cal,” Spavital said. “I got a taste of the potential this program has when I was in Berkeley previously, and I’m looking forward to bringing everything I can to the table to help us maximize that potential. We have a bunch of talented playmakers already on the roster, and I can’t wait to get to work with them and bring more talent in to join them.”

A’s make 4-run comeback to beat Angels in extras https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/10/03/as-make-4-run-comeback-to-beat-angels-in-extras/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/10/03/as-make-4-run-comeback-to-beat-angels-in-extras/#respond Tue, 04 Oct 2022 06:15:57 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8626009&preview_id=8626009 The A’s opened their final series of the season with a dramatic 5-4 comeback win over the Los Angeles Angels Monday night at the Coliseum powered by Seth Brown and finished off by Tony Kemp.

“This is a really good team win,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “A lot of excitement there late in the game, the energy picked up in the dugout. It was great to see.”

Entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Oakland (58-102) trailed 4-0 with five hits scattered throughout the previous frames. But then the comeback started.

Conner Capel, pinch hitting for Chad Pinder, got aboard with one out on an infield single and Brown tripled him home. Then Shea Langeliers brought Brown in to score with a single to center field, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

An inning later, the rally started when Ernie Clement hit a double leading off the inning. After Nick Allen walked to put the tying run on first base, Jordan Díaz and Sean Murphy went down.

With two outs, Capel walked and Brown hit a cue shot past a diving Anthony Rendon, bringing Allen and Clement home.

Domingo Acevedo (4-4, 3.38 ERA) pitched a scoreless tenth, which he opened by striking out three-time MVP Mike Trout with the automatic runner on second.

In the A’s half of the tenth, Christian Pache bunted automatic runner Jonah Bride to third base, then Tony Kemp scorched a ground ball past the glove of first baseman Matt Thaiss, bringing Bride in for the winning run.

“It’s huge, especially for all the young guys, to watch how they battled and the resiliency they showed,” Kemp said. “It’s a lot of the things that they can build off of and learn from and take into next year.”

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision, as Adrian Martinez allowed four earned runs in 4.1 innings for the A’s while Patrick Sandoval threw six scoreless for the Angels (73-87).

The teams return to the Coliseum Tuesday night for their penultimate game of the season. Cole Irvin (9-13, 4.11) will take the mound for the A’s and Michael Lorenzen (8-6, 4.52) is expected to start for the Angels.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

A’s fall again, one loss from 100 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/09/28/as-fall-again-one-loss-from-100/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/09/28/as-fall-again-one-loss-from-100/#respond Thu, 29 Sep 2022 05:35:50 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8621522&preview_id=8621522 To stave off a 100-loss season, the A’s will need to beat Shohei Ohtani on Thursday night.

They were beaten Wednesday night by Michael Lorenzen, Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels. The 4-1 loss put the A’s (56-99) within one loss of becoming just the second team in Oakland’s 54-year history to lose 100 games. The 1979 A’s went 54-108 under manager Jim Marshall.

Cole Irvin (9-12, 4.05) will start Thursday for the A’s against Ohtani (14-8, 2.47). Ohtani has struck out 203 batters in 153 innings and is nine innings-pitched away from becoming the first player to qualify for league-leading statistics as a hitter and pitcher..

The A’s struck out eight times in five innings against Lorenzen and didn’t score after the first inning. Rookie Conner Capel drove in the run for the A’s, who lost for the fifth time in their last six games.

Tony Kemp led off the game with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error by Angels third baseman Matt Duffy. Seth Brown walked and stole second base with two outs before Capel singled to left field.

That ended Lorenzen’s scoreless streak against Oakland at 12 innings.

“I think Lorenzen had pretty good life on his fastball,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “We came out aggressive and got a run in the first. I think overall, you tip your cap to the performance he had. The changeup looked really, really good tonight.”

The Angels had just one hit against A’s starter Adrian Martinez in three innings before breaking through in the fourth. Trout led off with a home run to center, his 10th of the month and his 38th in a season in which he was sidelined 42 games by injuries.

Ohtani followed with a single, while Taylor Ward reached base on a fielder’s choice. After a wild pitch by Martinez put both runners into scoring position, Matt Thaiss hit an RBI single for a 2-1 lead. Duffy made it 3-1 on a ground ball that scored Ward.

“I thought Martinez threw the ball well with a lot of movement on his pitches and we got to him the second time through the order and hit some balls hard,” Angels interim manager Phil Nevin said. “Those guys (Trout and Ohtani) are guys we lean on a lot and to get the three (runs) in that spot was big.”

In the eighth inning, Ward added his 22nd home run of the season on a blast to center field.

Martinez gave up three runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. The right-hander was making his 11th career start.

“Adrian came back against Trout and got him in that third at-bat, which shows that maturity, shows that progress,” Kotsay said about Martinez, who struck out the Angels’ three-time MVP as his last batter of the game in the fifth inning.

ROSTER MOVE

The Angels reinstated Anthony Rendon from the injured list and the third baseman will immediately begin serving a five-game suspension, with the goal of playing in the final three games of the regular season next week at Oakland.

Rendon already was on the injured list because of a wrist injury when he took an open-handed swing at the Seattle Mariners’ Jesse Winker during an on-field brawl June 26. That incident earned his suspension.

Rendon, who last played June 14, is batting .228 this season with five home runs and 24 RBIs.

Outfielder Magneuris Sierra and infielder Mike Ford were designated for assignment.

TRAINERS ROOM

A’s: LHP Sam Moll, who last appeared in a game Sept. 15, has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the season because of a strained left shoulder.

Alex Bregman homered and Trey Mancini had three hits to put Houston in position to sweep its three-game against the A’s — two weeks after Oakland swept the Astros in Oakland.

A’s starter Zach Logue (3-6) gave up six runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings. The Athletics were limited to five hits and left six runners on base.

McCullers, an All-Star in 2017, allowed two hits, struck out five and walked four, tossing 47 of his 81 pitches for strikes. It’s his first shutout since August 31, 2021.

The 28-year-old McCullers (1-0) pitched for the first time in 305 days for Houston, last going for the Astros in Game 4 of the 2021 AL Divisional Series against the Chicago White Sox. McCullers went on to miss the 2021 ALCS and World Series for the Astros due to a right flexor tendon strain.

McCullers got plenty of offensive support from the start.

In the first inning, Bregman belted his 15th homer of the season, making it 2-0. It was Bregman’s ninth home run and 33rd RBI since June 17.

The Astros tacked on two more runs in the sixth, stretching the lead to 6-0. The inning was highlighted by Mancini’s RBI double as he finished 3 for 4. Since being acquired by Houston from Baltimore, Mancini is 8 for 27 with eight RBIs.

Kyle Tucker and Chas McCormick each had an RBI triple. It was Tucker’s team-leading 76th RBI of the season.

Unfortunately for Oakland, the left-hander had one of his worst outings of the season Friday night.

Moll gave up a fifth-inning grand slam to Kyle Tucker, whose blast rallied the Houston Astros to a 7-5 win over Oakland.

Houston trailed 2-0 before breaking loose for a six-run rally in the fifth. José Altuve doubled and scored on a single by Yuli Gurriel. Yordan Alvarez followed with another single, and Alex Bregman walked to load the bases for Tucker. After Tucker missed badly on an 82 mph slider from Moll to make it a 1-2 count, the left-hander went back to the same pitch and this time Tucker pulled it a few rows deep into the right field seats.

Moll, who came into the game with a sparkling 2.02 earned run average, didn’t retire any of the four batters he faced Friday as his ERA jumped to 3.03.

“For Sammy, he’s been one of our top relievers, especially against left-hander … he’s gotten big outs for us,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “Tonight, he just didn’t execute the slider to Tucker. He left it up.”

And Tucker hit it out for his 21st homer of the season, giving Houston a 5-2 lead. After Moll (2-1) was replaced, Aledmys Díaz singled and Jeremy Peña doubled to keep the rally going and extend the lead to 6-2.

Astros starter Luis Garcia (9-8) went six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out six. Garcia snapped a three-game losing streak after receiving three runs or less of run support in each of those starts.

“We had 11 hits, they had 11 hits. It was unfortunate one of them was a grand slam,” Kotsay said.

Oakland had plenty of traffic on the bases early against Garcia. Jonah Bride doubled in the second inning to score Vimael Machín, and Tony Kemp scored in the third inning on a balk by Garcia that put Oakland up 2-0. Garcia and Astros manager Dusty Baker briefly argued with the umpires after the call.

Skye Bolt doubled off Will Smith in the seventh to score Bride and Machín. Bolt scored on a single by Ramón Laureano to pull Oakland within 6-5.

The A’s loaded the bases on Ryne Stanek in the eighth, but Stanek got Bolt to ground out to end the threat and hold the lead.

The Astros added an insurance run in the eighth after Peña scored on a sacrifice fly by Mauricio Dubón to make it 7-5.

Astros reliever Hector Neris pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.

Oakland starter Adam Oller pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.

Houston has won three of its last four. At 73-41, the Astros hold a two-game lead over the Yankees for the best record in the American League.

UP NEXT

Athletics: Zach Logue (3-5, 4.79) starts on Saturday. He allowed two runs and three hits in five innings of a 3-2 win over Houston on July 9.

Astros: Lance McCullers Jr. will make his 2022 debut after missing the first four months of the season with a forearm strain.

A’s struggles continue in 3-1 series opening loss in Kansas City https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/06/24/as-struggles-continue-in-3-1-series-opening-loss-in-kansas-city/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/06/24/as-struggles-continue-in-3-1-series-opening-loss-in-kansas-city/#respond Sat, 25 Jun 2022 04:31:13 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8516245&preview_id=8516245 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The A’s were handed their fourth straight loss Friday night, thanks to Edward Olivares’ two solo homers and Zack Greinke’s six innings of one-run ball in a 3-1 Royals victory.

The defeat marked the 10th straight time the A’s have lost the opening game of a series.

A’s starter Cole Irvin (2-5) gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and a season-high three walks.

“It was another good outing for Irvin,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “It was one hitter who was the result of two home runs. He pitched well and efficient.”

Unfortunately for the A’s, their ongoing offensive troubles made Irvin’s outing moot. Friday marked the seventh time in the last 10 games that Oakland has scored one or fewer runs.

Meanwhile, the Royals got some much-needed reinforcements from Olivares and Greinke (1-4), both of whom were activated from the injured list from rehab assignments on Friday. After missing 43 games with a right quad strain, Olivares belted homers to left field in his first two at-bats — in the third and fifth innings — for his first career multi-homer game.

“I was super excited,” Olivares said. “I had been waiting for this day for a long time. I’m here and happy to contribute.”

Greinke allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts in his first start since May 29, his longest outing since May 5 against St. Louis and the first win in his second stint with Kansas City.

“Zack has been so good on his rehabs, you can tell that he is pitching better and comes out there and just pounds the zone with everything,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He was really efficient working ahead in the count and just making him trust the defense. There was a lot of first-pitch swinging going on. He had a really good tempo and came right at them. I was happy for Zack to lead the way for us and get the win.”

Greinke sat down the first nine batters before Tony Kemp hit a leadoff single in the fourth. Seth Brown hit a two-out RBI single that scored Kemp.

“That is Zack at his best,” Kotsay said. “He is a master at his craft and knows how to set pitches up, use the strike zone well, keep the ball down and that is what he does and he did it well tonight.”

Royals relievers Dylan Coleman and Jose Cuas each held the A’s scoreless in an inning. Scott Barlow earned his ninth save of the season.

Carlos Santana added some insurance with an RBI single in the sixth.

Both Brown and Sean Murphy had two-hit games for the A’s, who lost two of their three games against Kansas City last weekend in Oakland.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Kansas City announced that C Salvador Perez had surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and was placed on the 10-day injured list. Olivares was activated in the corresponding move. The Royals also moved LHP Daniel Lynch (left index finger blister) on the 15-day injured list and activated Greinke.

UP NEXT

Jared Koenig (1-2, 6.59 ERA) will pitch for Oakland in a Saturday matinee. Brad Keller (2-8, 4.30 ERA) will counter for Kansas City.

Tony Kemp had three hits for the Athletics and Jed Lowrie also homered.

With the score tied at 5 in the seventh, Andrus’ single off Anthony Misiewicz (0-1) was deflected by left fielder Jesse Winker. The error allowed Sean Murphy to score the go-around run. Luis Barrera then drove in Andrus with a double to give Oakland a two-run lead.

Sam Moll (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the A’s, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Their skid against the Mariners dated to last July 23. With the victory, the A’s were able to avoid setting an Oakland record. They had lost 13 straight games against one team four times – the Mariners, Cleveland (1994-95), Baltimore (1977-79) and Texas (1977-78).

Dany Jiménez earned his ninth save of the season.

Andrus, who had two hits, tied the score with a solo home run in the sixth.

The A’s fell behind 5-4 in the fifth after Ty France drove in a run and Julio Rodriguez followed with a towering, two-run homer to left field. It was Rodriguez’s fifth homer of the season and second in two games.

Oakland led 2-0 in the third thanks to RBIs from Chad Pinder and Lowrie, but France’s line drive in the bottom of the inning scored two for Seattle. France drove in three runs.

After Kemp hit a one-out single in the fifth, Lowrie followed with his third home run of the season to put A’s back ahead 4-2. Lowrie also had two hits.

The Mariners have lost five of their last six games.

TRAINER’S ROOM

A’s outfielder Ramón Laureano, who was hit on the hand by a pitch on Saturday, went for another X-ray before Tuesday’s game “to make sure we didn’t miss anything,” said A’s manager Mark Kotsay. His initial X-rays after the injury were negative.

LEWIS RETURNS

Seattle outfielder Kyle Lewis, the 2020 American League Rookie of the Year, had two hits. His last major league game was nearly a year ago on May 31, 2021. The Mariners activated Lewis, who missed most of last season after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee, from the injured list before the game. He was the designated hitter and batted seventh.

Seattle released veteran outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from the roster and outrighted RHP Adrian Sampson to Triple-A Tacoma. Souza was designated for assignment by Seattle last weekend. He appeared in six games and hit .158 for the Mariners. Sampson was designated for assignment last week and cleared waivers allowing him to be outrighted to the minors.

These are places with highest wildfire risk in the U.S. https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/05/16/these-are-places-with-highest-wildfire-risk-in-the-us/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/05/16/these-are-places-with-highest-wildfire-risk-in-the-us/#respond Mon, 16 May 2022 20:28:05 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8450622&preview_id=8450622 Nearly 80 million properties across the country are at risk from wildfires, according to a first-of-its-kind study that tries to calculate how widespread the threat has become for homeowners and businesses across the U.S. as climate change stokes the danger to new levels every year.

Not surprisingly to fire-weary Californians, many of the properties with the highest risk are in the West, including many of the places already well-known for fire danger in the Golden State: The Sierra Nevada foothills and the hilly suburbs in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego and other Southern California counties. Much of the Bay Area was listed as low risk, although the hills in the East Bay, particularly around communities like Dublin, San Ramon, Blackhawk, Livermore and Walnut Creek were considered high risk, along with parts of Solano County, like Fairfield and Vacaville.

Until now, quantifying the risk of wildfires has been more difficult than floods, because of their deeply unpredictable nature. Wildfires can spread rapidly, as the wind moves embers and sparks long distances, igniting trees and buildings.

On Monday, nonprofit First Street Foundation released a nationwide wildfire risk assessment — a massive trove of data that will be integrated into Realtor.com, so that prospective buyers can see what the fire risk is for any given property.

“Unfortunately, [until] this point there’s never been a way for people to understand what their wildfire risk is on a property level,” said Matt Eby, founder and executive director of First Street.

First Street found that nearly 80 million properties are at some risk of wildfire, ranging from minor (less than a 1% chance of wildfire damage over 30 years) to extreme (more than 26% chance of wildfire damage over 30 years).

While the vast majority of those properties — 49 million — are at minor risk, more than 4 million are at severe or extreme risk.

Western states are experiencing drier and hotter weather, which dries out vegetation and creates more fuel for fire. Several destructive fires this year have already ignited well before the hottest, driest months, including a fast-moving blaze last week that destroyed 20 homes in a wealthy Orange County, California, community.

“The hazard is increasing because burn probabilities are going up,” said Dave Sapsis, a wildland fire scientist at Cal Fire. “There’s more fuel. The fuels are highly desiccated because we’re in protracted droughts. There’s also more [property] that’s out there in the way to get impacted.”

Some experts said the new wildfire risk assessment maps should be read with caution and plenty of context.

Craig Clements, director of San Jose State University’s Fire Weather Lab, said he was surprised that Santa Rosa, which has been devastated by wildfires in recent years, was listed as low risk, as were forests around the northern edges of Lake Tahoe and most of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the CZU Lightning Fire burned more than 86,000 acres two years ago, destroying 1,400 buildings and blackening Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

“Taking climate models down to individual addresses is tricky,” Clements said. “We should take that with a little bit of caution. There are lots of risk models out there. And you can reduce your risk.”

Clements noted that many of California’s largest fires have started from powerlines that sparked or fell during wind storms because PG&E and other utilities hadn’t properly maintained them. Some fires start as a result of freak dry lightning storms, or arson.

Homeowners can make upgrades to their homes, he said — from replacing wood shake shingles with fire-resistant shingles, to clearing brush and thinning vegetation. When many neighbors take such steps, studies show it reduces risk of whole communities by slowing fire spread.

“If you are in a high-risk area it doesn’t necessarily mean you are doomed,” Clements said.

Despite the drumbeat of headlines about wildfires from Colorado to New Mexico to California, the First Street study found the state with the most addresses currently at risk is Florida. But California will vault into the lead over the next 30 years.

The risk also will rise in Southern states such as Texas, as well as in states in the Appalachian region of the country, like West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, the study found.

“In Florida and other parts of the Southeast, this kind of climate change looks different than it does out West, but fire is every bit as dangerous,” said Ed Kearns, First Street’s chief data officer.

Six counties in New Mexico — including areas where the Calf Canyon-Hermits Peak Fire has burned more than 280,000 acres in recent weeks — are among the counties with the nation’s highest percentage of properties at risk of wildfire, according to First Street’s models.

In Texas, at least 90% of properties in 45 counties are at some risk.

Dry grass is a key fuel for wildfire in Texas, according to Brad Smith, a wildland fire behavior analyst at the Texas A&M Forest Service. Over 30 percent of the state was in extreme drought in mid-May — a month that is typically the state’s wettest.

“I’ve been working fire for 40 years now,” Smith said. “Homes aren’t saved on the day of the fire; they’re saved days, weeks, years ahead of time. Buying homes, you want to be aware — just like a flood zone — that there are fire zones, too, where homes are more at risk.”

Bay Area News Group Staff Writers Paul Rogers and John Woolfolk and CNN contributed to this story.

Reports: Brian Griese leaving ‘MNF’ to become 49ers’ QB coach https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/03/04/reports-brian-griese-leaving-mnf-to-become-49ers-qb-coach/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/03/04/reports-brian-griese-leaving-mnf-to-become-49ers-qb-coach/#respond Sat, 05 Mar 2022 02:13:43 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8338667&preview_id=8338667 Former NFL quarterback Brian Griese will leave his job as an analyst on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” to become the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach, according to multiple reports Friday night.

This will be the first coaching role for the 46-year-old Griese, the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese. Griese will take over for Rich Scangarello, who left his role as the 49ers quarterbacks coach to become the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Kentucky.

Brian Griese spent an 11-year playing career with the Denver Broncos (1998-2002), Miami Dolphins (2003), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2004-05, 2008) and Chicago Bears (2006-07).

In 93 career games (83 starts), Griese threw for 19,440 yards, 119 touchdowns and 99 interceptions with a 62.7 percent career completion rate. He was a Pro Bowler in 2000.

Griese spent two seasons in the ESPN broadcast booth with play-by-play announcer Steve Levy and fellow analyst Louis Riddick. ESPN is reportedly pursuing Fox’s Troy Aikman in an effort to overhaul its “Monday Night Football” broadcast.

Riddick interviewed for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ general manager opening earlier this week, further hinting at a shakeup at ESPN.

The 49ers are coming off an NFC Championship Game appearance. They are expected to trade starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and elevate Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 draft, to take his place
