The team honored McWright later Friday night with a candlelight vigil near 10th street and Reid, where police say the 18-year-old’s rented electric scooter collided with a school bus.

“In light of the tragic circumstances involving Camdan McWright, we have made the decision with New Mexico State to postpone the game, originally scheduled for this Saturday to a future date in the 2022 schedule,” San Jose State Director of Athletics Jeff Konya said in a statement.

It’s unclear if the game will be played. San Jose State (4-2, 2-1 Mountain West) doesn’t have any open dates through the conference championship game on Dec. 3. The Aggies used to be SJSU’s conference rivals, but currently play as an Independent.

SJSU’s next game is Oct. 29 at home against Nevada.

Earthquakes’ Shea Salinas enjoys storybook home finale https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/10/02/earthquakes-shea-salinas-enjoys-storybook-home-finale/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/10/02/earthquakes-shea-salinas-enjoys-storybook-home-finale/#respond Sun, 02 Oct 2022 20:20:53 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8624776&preview_id=8624776 Shea Salinas made his final home appearance with the Earthquakes memorable Saturday night at PayPal Park.

The popular midfielder who has played 13 seasons for San Jose scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute of a 2-0 triumph over Minnesota United.

Salinas, in his 15th season overall, holds the club’s all-time assists record (50).

On his climactic goal that broke a scoreless deadlock, Salinas seized the initiative. He took a direct free kick, and his low shot caromed off the leg of a Minnesota player and into back of the net.

“I haven’t taken a direct free kick my entire career,” Salinas said. “I was thinking that the grass is wet, the ground is hard, I’m just going to try and hit it low and hope that it skips, and the goalie bobbles it into the corner.

“God had a different plan. I tried to hit it with the inside of my foot to the corner and it got a good deflection and went into the back of the net. I think God had this all planned out and I got to celebrate,” he continued.

Salinas, normally a reserve this season, asked interim head coach Alex Covelo if he could start in the run-up to the match.

“He said, ‘Alex, I would love to start. I’m feeling the butterflies in my stomach again.’ So, I said, ‘Let’s go.’ That’s it. He did very well,” the coach shared.

Fittingly, on Sunday, Salinas received the club’s Andrew Bedard Spirit of the Game Award/Humanitarian of the Year for the fifth time (2009, 2012, 2014, 2015).

San Jose (8-10-15, 34 points) rounded out the scoring on a goal by Benji Kikanović, who sent a low shot just inside the far post.

Covelo has come to expect good things from Salinas.

“He always has been a role model on and off the field. I was on the bench in 2017 when Shea scored the second goal and gave us the victory (over the Galaxy) at Stanford. It has been a pleasure.”

Salinas says MLS has grown “a ton” these past 15 years. Early in his career not many people knew the league existed. Now it’s an international brand, he says.

“The quality of players has grown tremendously,” Salinas said. “I’ve been lucky to survive for 15 years. We have 18 and 19-year-old kids that are way ahead of where I have been.”

The Earthquakes’ club award winners: Jeremy Ebobisse, Offensive Player of the Year, and Player’s Player of the Year; JT Marcinkowski, Defensive Player of the Year; Benji Kikanović, Young Player of the Year; Tommy Thompson, Media Good Guy; Shea Salinas for the Andrew Bedard Spirit of the Game Award/Humanitarian of the Year.

Earthquakes disappoint with leaky defense in season-opening loss to Red Bulls https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/02/26/earthquakes-disappoint-with-leaky-defense-in-season-opening-loss-to-red-bulls/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/02/26/earthquakes-disappoint-with-leaky-defense-in-season-opening-loss-to-red-bulls/#respond Sun, 27 Feb 2022 02:55:11 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8327615&preview_id=8327615 SAN JOSE — New year, revamped team, same old Quakes.

The Earthquakes kicked off the post-Chris Wondolowski era with a clunker on Saturday at PayPal Park – a 3-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls in the season-opener that displayed that leaky defense Quakes fans have come to know and curse under head coach Matias Almeyda.

The franchise that has made the playoffs just three times in the past 10 seasons hoped to start quickly with a fast attacking style, but the physical Red Bulls outshot San Jose 18-12. Even though the Quakes had 70 percent of the possession, New York bided its time and attacked with lethal intention.

San Jose has a new look this season with the legendary Wondolowski, the MLS all-time leading scorer with 171 goals, now helping new GM Chris Leitch in the front office.

Transitions, as the Quakes will learn, take time.

“It’s the first match without Wondo and the other seven guys that left,” Almeyda said, using a translator. “It’s a big change. But we’re all here to present the team in a different way, and to improve as well.”

The team rolled out three new established MLS veterans in Francisco Calvo, Jamiro Monteiro and Jan Gregus in the starting lineup, but the newcomers didn’t immediately gel. Monteiro absorbed a lot of punishment in his Quakes debut.

“I hate to lose, but when I lose, I learn from it and take it to the next game,” said Monteiro, a playmaker and designated player traded to the Quakes from the Philadelphia Union. “It’s motivation for the next game, and I will do everything for the next game not to lose.”

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, San Jose catalyst Javier “Chofis” Lopez nodded in a shot off a laser-like free kick by Cristian Espinoza to equalize in the 69th minute. Lopez led the Quakes in scoring with 12 goals last season.

Three minutes later, the Red Bulls quickly retook the lead when Omir Fernandez shot in between the legs of stubborn goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski. Tom Barlow added insult to injury with a tap-in two minutes into stoppage time.

The Quakes did show potential, but the fan base has seen this storyline far too often.

San Jose won its first two home games in 2021 but managed only three wins in its final 15 home matches (3-7-5) while averaging just one goal a contest and being outscored 54-to-46 on the season.

Will the franchise figure it out this time after missing the playoffs in 2021, now with a restless head coach seemingly eyeing the exit ramp in the final season of his contract?

In the run-up to Saturday’s game, the Argentine coach said he was “thankful” for the chance to coach San Jose but added that he has 10 months before his contract is up and “there’s personal interest and there’s interest from other people,” that he may pursue.

After a lively start on Saturday, San Jose began to struggle after right back Nathan of Brazil exited the match with an injury in the 21st minute, and what had been a promising back-and-forth battle turned decidedly in New York’s favor. The Red Bulls finally broke the scoreless stalemate in the 45th minute when Patryk Klimala beat Marcinkowski from the near post off a cross from Lewis Morgan on the right.

New York outshot the Quakes 12-5 in the first half.

Overall, it was shades of last season when the Quakes’ defense ranked near the bottom of the league.

Monteiro was shaken up early on after a tangle in the middle and briefly left the field. The Cape Verde International had 21 assists in 75 regular season games in Philly (70 starts). Now he needs to find a way to make cleaner connections with his current team.

“I feel comfortable with the guys – I’m happy to make my first game for San Jose. Disappointed that we didn’t get the three points, but we have a long season,” Monteiro said. “This game we learn a lot, we will move on make it better.”

Calvo, a defender, is a former Chicago Fire captain and Costa Rica international. He gives the team an option on defense along with the backline tandem of Tanner Beason and Nathan.

“Surely it will take some time,” Almeyda said of the new players. “There are some people who pick up new systems faster than others… I think the new guys looked good today. Surely as time goes on, they will look just as well as the rest of the team.”

Can Santa Clara repeat as women’s soccer champs? Home-field advantage should help https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/12/02/can-santa-clara-repeat-as-womens-soccer-champs-home-field-advantage-should-help/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/12/02/can-santa-clara-repeat-as-womens-soccer-champs-home-field-advantage-should-help/#respond Thu, 02 Dec 2021 16:35:34 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=8190668&preview_id=8190668 After winning the NCAA women’s soccer championship last season, Santa Clara is back for more.

This time, on home turf.

Unseeded Santa Clara (15-5-2) will face West Coast Conference rival and No. 4 seed Brigham Young (17-4-1) in a national semifinal at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Florida State and Rutgers, both top seeds, will meet in the other College Cup semifinal at SCU, Friday at 4 p.m.

The winners advance to the final, which was scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m. but will be moved to Monday if BYU advances so the Mormon university can observe the sabbath.

In a show of WCC power, both BYU and Santa Clara took down No. 1 seeds on the road to get here.

“We think the WCC is an awesome women’s soccer conference,” Santa Clara coach Jerry Smith said, “and I hope winner of our game goes on to win the national championship to just put an exclamation point on just how good the WCC is.”

Last season, the 11th-seeded Broncos earned their second NCAA title and first one since 2001 with a 4-1 shocker over Florida State in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in May, in a shortened and delayed season due to the COVID pandemic.

Now the Broncos are back quickly and buoyed by a nine-game win streak in the NCAA tourney.

“When we won the championship in ’01, we got back to the final in ’02, so there’s something about winning the championship that gives your team a lot of confidence,” Smith said.

The Broncos, 8-0-1 at home the season, upset top seed Duke 2-1 in the quarterfinals, courtesy of first-half goals by offensive stalwarts Izzy D’Aquila and Kelsey Turnbow. BYU clinched its first trip to the College Cup with a 4-1 win over South Carolina.

Smith’s team beat BYU, the highest-scoring team in the country with 77 goals, 1-0 on Oct. 30 on a goal by Turnbow in the 74th minute and two clutch saves by goalkeeper Kylie Foutch late. Smith describes the Cougars as the best team he faced all season.

BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said the Cougars are looking forward to Friday’s rematch.

“You don’t think you’re gonna get (a rematch) at a game of this magnitude, but we’ll take it,” she said. “Obviously, they’re a very talented team, defending national champions. They’ve got a lot of weapons.”

Should Santa Clara get past BYU, it could face another familiar foe in Florida State, giving the Seminoles a chance to avenge last year’s championship loss.

Smith described the regular season for his team as a “bit rocky,” in part because of the short time between seasons. After finishing in May, they started up again in July, got their championship rings and watches in October and were still doing celebrations in November.

“Obviously we love celebrating, but it was a distraction for this current season, not to mention you’ve got a big target on your back, not to mention we played a tough schedule mostly on the road. I kind of think that made us stronger,” he said.

Here’s a look at the College Cup teams:

Santa Clara

Senior F Kelsey Turnbow, who leads the Broncos with 11 goals, 12 assists, and 34 points, has been named a MAC Hermann Award semifinalist. Senior M Alex Loera and Turnbow were first-team All-West Regional selections. The Broncos topped Wisconsin 2-1 in the third round despite playing down a player the final 29 minutes. SCU has been to 31 NCAA Tournaments, 11 College Cups and won national championships in 2001 and 2020. Three of SCU’s losses this season have come against No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 UCLA and Stanford. Coach Jerry Smith has 523 career wins, third most in Division I history.

BYU

The Cougars blew out South Carolina 4-1 in the quarterfinals before a sold-out home crowd. All-American Mikayla Colohan (18 goals, 15 assists) and Cameron Tucker (16 goals) top the deep team. The Cougars and Santa Clara were co-WCC champs, but SCU got the automatic NCAA bid by virtue of a 1-0 win over BYU. The Cougars are just 3-9-5 all-time against SCU, but last season, the Cougars prevailed 2-1. Tucker had the winning goal in the 57th minute.

Florida State

No. 1 FSU outscored opponents 65-13, winning an eighth ACC championship. Holding midfielder Jaelin Howell and center back Emily Madril were named MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists. Howell is the reigning MAC Hermann winner. The duo helped the FSU backline work 12 shutouts in 23 games and allow just 13 goals overall.

Rutgers

Head coach Mike O’Neill guided the Scarlet Knights to their first Big Ten Conference title, 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and first College Cup. Four players were named to the All-North Region first team: Amirah Ali, Gabby Provenzano, freshman Riley Tiernan, and Frankie Tagliaferri; and GK Megan McLeland made the third team. The No. 5 Scarlet Knights beat No. 7 Arkansas 4-2 in a shootout after a 2-2 draw in the quarterfinals.

One week after Nathan Price’s field goal in the waning seconds sent Monte Vista to the next round, Encinal’s John Brindley booted a field goal as time expired to keep the Jets’ season alive.

This week’s version also includes heroes in Oak Grove’s dramatic victory over Palo Alto, De La Salle’s rout of Monte Vista, Valley Christian’s win over St.Ignatius, Las Lomas’ thumping of Hayward and Clayton Valley Charter’s pasting of Foothill.

Here are the details:

Encinal’s John Brindley

Kicked a 26-yard field goal as time expired to send top-seeded Encinal into the North Coast Section Division V final with a 24-21 victory over De Anza. “We’ve been training for months and months to get to the NCS finals,” Brindley said. “Our eventual goal is state, so it’s just another step in that direction.”

Oak Grove’s Malique Sumler

Was a workhorse in a 40-36 victory at Palo Alto in the CCS Division II semifinals. the 5-foot-10, 191-pound running back kept plugging away and only got stronger, with over 100 rushing yards in the second half. Sumler finished with 25 carries for 184 yards, including the eventual game-winner from 11 yards out with 5:31 left in the fourth quarter.

Oak Grove’s Elias Herrera

Don’t judge the junior by his stature. At 5-foo-4 and 150 pounds, the junior is a big-time playmaker. Herrera intercepted a pass with nine seconds left in the third quarter of a 40-36 thriller at Palo Alto to help the Eagles reach the CCS Division II championship game. He capped the ensuing drive on a 4-yard fly sweep to reclaim a lead that he originated with a 44-yard touchdown on the game’s opening drive. Herrera finished with eight carries for 108 yards and a pair of scores.

Palo Alto’s Jamir Shepard

The Fresno State commit displayed his speed in a 40-36 loss to Oak Grove that ended his season one game shy of a shot at a CCS title. The wide receiver caught a pair of short passes from sophomore QB Danny Peters and turned them in 83- and 80-yard touchdowns that shifted showed only a glimpse of what he’ll look like at the next level.

De La Salle’s Zeke Berry

Caught four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown as the top-seeded Spartans, as expected, had no problem getting past Monte Vista, winning 49-13 to advance to the NCS Division I final next week.

Valley Christian’s Isaiah McElvane

Carried 15 times for 120 yards and also had an interception as the Warriors, playing on their home field, defeated St. Ignatius 28-7 to advance to the CCS Division I final next week.

Valley Christian’s Michael Corini

Scored two of the Warriors’ touchdowns on short runs, finishing with 75 yards in 15 carries, as Valley Christian reached a CCS final for the 11th time under coach Mike Machado.

Clayton Valley Charter’s Omari Taylor

Scored three touchdowns and finished with 188 yards on the ground as the Ugly Eagles, the top seed in the NCS Division II bracket, reached the final with a 49-7 rout of Foothill.

Las Lomas’ Everett Johnson

Completed 12 of 20 passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns with different receivers. He hit Isaiah Newell on a wheel route for 48 yards, Zack Patterson on a post for 31 yards, Elijah Lash on a flat route for 27 yards and Tyler Darr on a slant from 5 yards.

Friday Night Stars: Week 10’s top performers in Bay Area prep football https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/10/26/friday-night-stars-week-10s-top-performers-in-bay-area-prep-football/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/10/26/friday-night-stars-week-10s-top-performers-in-bay-area-prep-football/#respond Sat, 26 Oct 2019 14:58:42 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com?p=6598006&preview_id=6598006 With the regular season winding down, the stakes have gotten much higher.

League championships and playoff positioning were on the line at many high school football fields Friday night across the Bay Area.

James Logan all but wrapped up its league title with a win on the road over Moreau Catholic. Los Gatos held off Palo Alto in the closing minutes for a key Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division win.

Monte Vista stepped up yet again to narrowly win another league contest.

In Atherton, Sacred Heart Prep took care of business against The King’s Academy.

As always, if you know of a Bay Area football player who had a star performance Friday night, reach out and email us at sports@bayareanewsgroup.com.

Will Mackie, Sacred Heart Prep

The junior helped secure a 24-9 victory over visiting The King’s Academy moments after disaster nearly struck on Senior Night. One play after SHP lost a fumble inside the 10-yard line with just over four minutes left, Mackie seemingly shot out of a cannon around the right tackle to blindside TKA’s quarterback on a strip-sack fumble recovery in the red zone. Three snaps later, SHP running back Tevita Moimoi plowed in from 3 yards out for the insurance touchdown.

Ryan O’Neil, Campolindo

The running back ran for 85 yards and caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown as Campolindo bounced back from a stunning loss to Acalanes to topple previously unbeaten Las Lomas 31-14.

Nate Rutchena, Monte Vista

The senior wideout and safety scored on a 29-yard reception and returned a fumble 28 yards for a score in a 31-21 win over Clayton Valley Charter for the ninth-ranked Mustangs.

Will Schweitzer, Los Gatos

The 6-foot-2 junior linebacker and tight end made two key plays in his team’s 29-22 victory over Palo Alto. After Palo Alto took an 8-7 lead and recovered its onside kick in the first quarter, Schweitzer grabbed an interception and returned it to the Palo Alto 21, setting up a touchdown. When Palo Alto scored with 2:28 left to get within seven points of Los Gatos, Schweitzer dived on the Vikings’ onside kick attempt and the Wildcats kept possession the rest of the game.

Chase Sims and Shamoun “V” Duncan-Niusulu, James Logan

It wouldn’t be right to mention Chase Sims or Shamoun “V” Duncan-Niusulu without the other. Sims recorded 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns, one on a 40-yard run and the other from a pick-six. Duncan-Niusulu rushed for 142 yards with three touchdowns. The two combined to outscore Moreau Catholic as James Logan won the first-place showdown in the Mission Valley Athletic League 36-20.

Josue Torres, Milpitas

The senior running back scored on runs of 2 and 20 yards in the second half Friday night as traditionally-strong Milpitas posted just its second win on the season, winning its Homecoming game 28-7 over Santa Clara.
