Here are some of the highlights:

– In an MLK Classic at Berkeley, the home team pulled off the boys basketball stunner of the day, beating seventh-ranked California 52-34. One night earlier, California knocked off second-ranked San Ramon Valley 62-58 and Berkeley lost at home to No. 20 Alameda 60-58.

– Berkeley coach Mike Hudson said his players were motivated by what he described as a “very disappointing” loss on Friday, one he thought his team “let get away.”

– “We were just locked in,” Hudson added in an email. “California is an explosive team, one of best teams in the Bay Area, so we knew we had to mix things up defensively to try to keep them off balance. All in all, it was a great showing from our guys— been coaching for a long time and that is one of the better defensive efforts I have seen.”

— Hudson gave a shout-out to his defensive coordinator, Toby Merchant.

– Samir O’Brien (14 points), AJ Loustau (13 points) and Ollie Miller (11 points) led the Yellowjackets in scoring. Berkeley improved to 12-5. California is 14-5.

– San Ramon Valley, without starters Seamus Deely and Will Ambidge, rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Menlo-Atherton 60-57 at Miramonte’s MLK-John Lewis Memorial showcase. SRV entered the game on a two-game skid after entering the week with a 15-1 record.

– McKenna Woliczko, Archbishop Mitty’s freshman sensation, had another spectacular game. She scored 30 points to lead the second-ranked Monarchs over sixth-ranked Oakland Tech 68-60 at Bishop O’Dowd’s MLK showcase. Friday, Woliczko had 26 points in a 79-30 league victory at St. Francis.

– Elijah Perryman buried a 3-point from the top of the arc as time expired, giving sixth-ranked Clayton Valley a 60-57 win over No. 15 Monte Vista in the nightcap at Miramonte’s showcase. Clayton Valley trailed 41-28 at halftime.

– The Salesian girls pulled away in the second half to turn back Moreau Catholic 57-43 at O’Dowd’s MLK showcase. Makiah Asidanya (15 points), Sofia Fidelus (14 points) and N’yana Asiasi (11 points) led the third-ranked Pride, who return to O’Dowd on Monday to play top-ranked Piedmont on Day 2 of the Oakland school’s MLK event.

– Jorell Clark had 14 points and Riley Yuen finished with 13 points to lead Palo Alto to a 55-47 win over Mountain View in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division play. It was a nice bounce-back win for the Vikings after they lost to Los Gatos 60-41 on Wednesday.

– Sam Norris scored 21 points and TJ O’Brien had 20 as Sacred Heart Prep cruised past Stuart Hall 82-47 at Miramonte’s showcase. The duo shot a combined 16 of 20 from the field.

– The Piedmont boys scored five points in the first quarter against St. Mary’s-Berkeley at Berkeley’s showcase. They then exploded for 28 in the second quarter on their way to a 65-38 win. AJ Harris (17 points), Theo Evans (10 points) and Ravi Silverberg (nine points) led the way.

Among the many goals that California has this season, beating San Ramon Valley was at the top of the list.

But Friday night, in front of a packed home crowd in San Ramon, California upset the Bay Area News Group’s No. 2 team with a 62-58 win in East Bay Athletic League play.

California improved to 14-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Kellen Torrey (21 points), Amari Gray (19 points) and Adam Zalami (11 points) scored in double figures for California.

“We’re going to treat each league game as if it were a championship game,” California coach Steve Ohlmeyer said. “We have to prepare for it that way. Mentally, physically and everything else, because that’s what you have to do in this league.”

For the Pinewood girls, it must have felt like it began over the weekend.

The perennial power from Los Altos Hills, unranked by the Bay Area News Group after losing four of its six games, welcomed Burlingame transfer Ava Uhrich for its matchup Saturday at third-raked Salesian.

All the 5-foot-11 senior did was score 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, grab eight rebounds and hand out three assists to help lead Pinewood to an eye-opening 67-62 victory.

Alex Facelo added 21 points for Pinewood, which shot an astounding 12-of-18 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Pinewood improved to 3-4.

Salesian, which won the Diamond Division at the West Coast Jamboree in late December, fell to 12-2.

Nyana Asiasi finished with 14 points and Makiah Asidanya and Sofia Fidelus each had 11 points for Salesian, last season’s Division I state champion.

Pinewood played well below its usual high standards with Uhrich ineligible through December and last season’s Bay Area News Group player of the year, Elle Ladine, now at the University of Washington.

The Panthers lost to Archbishop Riordan and Los Altos at the St. Francis tournament, which dropped their record to 1-4.

They closed out December with a 69-22 win over winless Capuchino.

Now, it appears, Pinewood is back among the Bay Area’s elite.

No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 72, St. Ignatius 37

Freshman sensation McKenna Woliczko scored 21 points to lead Mitty, playing on the road in San Francisco, to a victory over St. Ignatius in a West Catholic Athletic League opener.

Haley Hernandez and Elana Weisman each scored nine points and Elle Hanson and Maya Hernandez added eight points apiece as Mitty improved to 10-2 heading into its showdown at home Wednesday against fourth-ranked Sacred Heart Cathedral.

SI fell to 5-7.

Etc.:

In boys basketball, top-ranked Dougherty Valley cruised at home past Berkeley 63-38 to improve to 15-1. The winning side played again without stars Ryan Beasley and Connor Sevilla, both ill. But instead of another fast-breaking points-fest, St. Augustine slipped past the plodding Wildcats 62-58 and ended the San Ramon school’s great run in the National Division semifinals.

The same layups and jump shots that seemed automatic a day ago were suddenly rimming out for Dougherty Valley, who squandered a 29-27 halftime lead and lost its first game of the year (12-1).

Connor Sevilla scored a game-high 24 points for the Wildcats, and backcourt partner Ryan Beasley scored 14. Wing Blake Hudson notched 13 points.

Coach Mike Hansen said the frustrating loss, which featured St. Augustine burning the Wildcats on several out-of-bounds plays, may end up benefitting his team in the long run.

“We have to clean up our execution because when you play good teams like we did tonight, stuff gets exposed,” Hansen said. “As a coach, I’m like ‘Great, now I know what we need to work on.”

St. Augustine’s Jurian Dixon scored 23 and LoLo Randolph scored 15 for a team that will face St. John’s-Washington, D.C., in the final.

“They’re very well coached and very athletic, and we came out a little flat,” Hansen said.

Dougherty Valley will play Eastside Catholic-Washington in the third-place game on Friday.

“We have to bring some energy and effort tomorrow,” Hansen said. “Going 3-1 down here would be outstanding.”

No. 6 San Ramon Valley 53, Roosevelt-Eastvale 52

Luke Isaak’s 3-pointer with five seconds left propelled San Ramon Valley past Roosevelt and into the championship game on Friday in the Gold Division at The Classic at Damien in Southern California.

Isaak (15 points) and Seamus Deely (13) led San Ramon Valley in scoring as the Wolves improved to 13-1.

The Danville school will play Ironwood-Glenwood in the final.

“This is a team that is playing with Coach Del constantly on our minds,” the team tweeted after the semifinal. “Hope we are making him proud!!!!”

Enormously popular SRV assistant coach Hans de Lannoy, 70, is in hospice after battling cancer for years.

In four decades as a head coach for multiple teams – including the SRV boys and girls programs – de Lannoy won 512 games. He was inducted into the SRV Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

No. 4 De La Salle 53, St. John Bosco-Bellflower 52

One shot was all it took for De La Salle to turn what would have been a painful defeat into an epic victory in the top division at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.

Matt Daly buried a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to give the Spartans the victory after St. John Bosco roared back from 18 points behind through three quarters to nearly pull off a stunning comeback.

But it wasn’t to be for Bosco as De La Salle (10-3) scrambled on its last possession to find a shot that eventually came when the ball made its way to Daly.

Evan Wells and Alec Blair each scored 16 points for De La Salle, which will conclude the tournament Friday against JSerra-San Juan Capistrano.
