One day after knocking Memphis commit Mikey Williams and his star-studded San Ysidro squad from the winner’s bracket in the top division at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic, Dougherty Valley hoped to leave its game against St. Augustine-San Diego on Thursday night with a berth in the final.

But instead of another fast-breaking points-fest, St. Augustine slipped past the plodding Wildcats 62-58 and ended the San Ramon school’s great run in the National Division semifinals.

The same layups and jump shots that seemed automatic a day ago were suddenly rimming out for Dougherty Valley, who squandered a 29-27 halftime lead and lost its first game of the year (12-1).

Connor Sevilla scored a game-high 24 points for the Wildcats, and backcourt partner Ryan Beasley scored 14. Wing Blake Hudson notched 13 points.

Coach Mike Hansen said the frustrating loss, which featured St. Augustine burning the Wildcats on several out-of-bounds plays, may end up benefitting his team in the long run.

“We have to clean up our execution because when you play good teams like we did tonight, stuff gets exposed,” Hansen said. “As a coach, I’m like ‘Great, now I know what we need to work on.”

St. Augustine’s Jurian Dixon scored 23 and LoLo Randolph scored 15 for a team that will face St. John’s-Washington, D.C., in the final.

“They’re very well coached and very athletic, and we came out a little flat,” Hansen said.

Dougherty Valley will play Eastside Catholic-Washington in the third-place game on Friday.

“We have to bring some energy and effort tomorrow,” Hansen said. “Going 3-1 down here would be outstanding.”

The Danville school will play Ironwood-Glenwood in the final.

“This is a team that is playing with Coach Del constantly on our minds,” the team tweeted after the semifinal. “Hope we are making him proud!!!!”

No. 4 De La Salle 53, St. John Bosco-Bellflower 52

One shot was all it took for De La Salle to turn what would have been a painful defeat into an epic victory in the top division at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.

Matt Daly buried a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to give the Spartans the victory after St. John Bosco roared back from 18 points behind through three quarters to nearly pull off a stunning comeback.

But it wasn’t to be for Bosco as De La Salle (10-3) scrambled on its last possession to find a shot that eventually came when the ball made its way to Daly.

Evan Wells and Alec Blair each scored 16 points for De La Salle, which will conclude the tournament Friday against JSerra-San Juan Capistrano.
