Alec Balica, Castro Valley soccer: The junior had himself a game against Encinal, scoring four goals to lead the Trojans to a 7-1 victory in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play. Balica continued his torrid play to open this week, scoring two goals Monday in a 4-0 win over San Leandro, which improved Castro Valley’s record to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the league.

Josh Clark, Oakland basketball: The senior scored in double figures in both of the Wildcats’ victories in Oakland Athletic League play last week. He had 11 points in a 56-48 victory over Fremont-Oakland and 12 in an 81-43 rout of Skyline. Clark shot a combined 50% (8 of 16) from the field.

Andre Gonzalez Lombera, Menlo School soccer: The junior scored in the 75th minute as Menlo defeated The King’s Academy 3-2. He also scored twice in a 3-2 win over Crystal Springs and had a goal in a 3-0 win over Harker as the Knights improved to 3-0 in West Bay Athletic League play.

Max Houghton, Los Gatos basketball: Led the way with 17 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Wildcats defeated Los Altos 52-33 on Friday. Two days earlier, he had 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting — and 6 for 6 free-throw shooting — in a 60-41 victory over Palo Alto. Los Gatos ended the week 11-4 overall and 3-0 in its league.

Braddock Kjellesvig, Christopher basketball: The 6-foot-6 sophomore finished with 28 points on 10-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds as Christopher defeated Oak Grove 59-50 in a BVAL Mt. Hamilton East Division opener. The forward/center followed that game with 26 points and 15 rebounds on 13-of-15 shooting in a 67-42 rout of Santa Teresa on Friday as Christopher improved to 11-3, 2-0.

Samir O’Brien, Berkeley basketball: Coming off a tough loss to Alameda in league play on Friday, Berkeley bounced back on Saturday at its MLK Classic with a stunning 52-34 victory over seventh-ranked California as O’Brien led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 14 points. The result improved Berkeley’s record to 12-5.

Kiratraj Sanghera, American basketball: In a 55-52 victory over Mission San Jose, the 6-foot-5 junior had 24 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Earlier in the week, he filled the stat sheet with 31 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in a 60-59 loss to James Logan. In the two games, he was 25 for 42 shooting (60%).

Gael Segura, Half Moon Bay soccer: The senior scored a goal and assisted on another as Half Moon Bay stayed red hot with a 3-1 victory over South San Francisco in Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division play. The Cougars began this week with a record of 10-0-2 overall and 2-0 in their league.

Tyler Suzuki, Leigh basketball: The junior shooting guard helped the Longhorns open BVAL Mt. Hamilton West Division play with two victories on the road. He scored 19 points in a 64-50 win over Independence and 14 in a 65-51 win over Piedmont Hills.

Angel Vasquez, James Logan soccer: The sophomore scored both of his team’s goals as James Logan beat Kennedy-Fremont 2-0 in a Mission Valley Athletic League match. The victory improved the Colts’ record to 9-5-1, 5-1.

Makiah Asidanya, Salesian basketball: Asidanya scored 14 points, had seven steals and handed out five assists in a league matchup against St. Mary’s Berkeley. Asidanya is committed to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. 

Trinity Chu, California basketball: The sophomore guard scored an efficient 22 points in the Grizzlies’ 60-32 league win over Amador Valley. Chu made 8 of 11 shots and contributed four steals on the defensive side too. 

Kiarra D’Arcangelo, Westmont soccer: D’Arcangelo scored a goal and had an assist in Westmont’s 4-1 win over James Lick. It marked the first time the junior had not scored twice in a game in which she found the back of the net. 

Madelyn Funk, Livermore soccer: Livermore’s junior goalkeeper helped keep another clean sheet during Livermore’s scoreless draw with Granada. According to stats inputted into MaxPreps, she has allowed only three goals in 495 minutes of play and has 31 saves. 

Audrey Le-Nguyen, Campolindo soccer: The senior was arguably Campolindo’s best player in last week’s thrilling 4-3 victory over College Park. She scored one goal and found her teammates for two additional assists. 

Amanda Muse, Heritage basketball: The Patriots’ senior center scored her 1,000th career point in a blowout win over Antioch last Friday. The UCLA commit became only the fourth player in the program’s history to reach that mark. Muse scored 17 in the game. 

Kori Pickelle, Santa Teresa soccer: The senior scored a hat trick (three goals) in Santa Teresa’s 4-1 win over Prospect last week. Earlier in the season, PIckelle had two goals and two assists in a win over Independence. 

Kennedy Schoennauer, Lincoln-San Jose soccer: The Utah commit has continued to have a banner senior season for the Lions. Schoennauer scored five goals in a win over Christopher, the third time she has reached that mark in a match this season. 

Quinn Shirley, Aragon soccer: The sophomore midfielder scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Capuchino. Shirley has three goals and four assists this season for a 6-1 Aragon team.

Dougherty Valley basketball player Blake Hudson (44.33%) finished second and Newark Memorial soccer player Ricardo Aceves took third.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Cruz scored a hat trick — three goals — as Hayward defeated crosstown rival Tennyson 7-1 to run its record to 7-2-2 overall and 5-0 in league play. The junior began this week with six goals and two assists for the season.

Mountain View soccer player Laila Edris (37.76%) placed second and Menlo School basketball player Karen Xin was third.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Fa’i averaged 18 points and nine rebounds in three games at the Newark Optimist Club holiday tournament. The senior scored 16, 24 and 15 points as Newark Memorial finished the tournament 2-1.

Ricardo Aceves, Newark Memorial soccer: In his team’s 3-1 non-league victory over Granada, the junior scored twice as the Cougars won their second in a row to enter this week with a 5-6 overall record. They are 3-1 in league play.

Rudy Cruz, Hayward soccer: The junior finished with a hat trick — three goals — as Hayward defeated crosstown rival Tennyson 7-1 to run its record to 7-2-2 overall and 5-0 in league play. Cruz began this week with six goals and two assists for the season.

Blake Hudson, Dougherty Valley basketball: The 6-3 senior had 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-38 victory over Kennedy-Fremont and 20 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in a 63-38 win over Berkeley as the top-ranked Wildcats improved to 15-1.

Luke Isaak, San Ramon Valley basketball: The sophomore scored 30 points as the second-ranked Wolves improved to 15-1 with an 89-79 victory at home in Danville over Oakland.

JP Kerrigan, Sacred Heart Prep basketball: The junior led the Gators with 15 points as they edged Menlo-Atherton 52-51 in overtime. The victory improved SHP’s record to 5-4.

Jake King, Clayton Valley basketball: In a 68-62 win over College Park, the 6-5 senior was 7-of-9 from 3-point range and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, finishing with 33 points. He began this week averaging 18.1 points per game for a team that is 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division.

Arnav Mahadev, Monta Vista soccer: The junior scored two goals to lead Monta Vista past Gilroy 3-1 on Saturday and also scored in a 4-2 loss to Milpitas earlier in the week. He began this week with seven goals on the season for a team that is 4-4-1.

Jasir Rencher, Archbishop Riordan basketball: Taking on a larger role after King-Njhsanni Wilhite transferred to a Las Vegas prep academy, the 6-5 sophomore scored 19 points in a 57-38 victory over St. Francis and 11 in a 63-52 win over St. Ignatius. The Crusaders are 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League.

Logan Robeson, Campolindo basketball: After missing two games because of illness, the 6-3 senior filled the stat sheet — 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists — as Campo defeated Northgate 65-56 in a Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division opener. The Cougars improved to 9-4, 1-0.

Derek Sangster, Archbishop Mitty basketball: The Princeton-bound star returned from a wrist injury that sidelined him for six games to lead the San Jose powerhouse to victories over Bellarmine and Serra to open West Catholic Athletic League play, The senior scored 16 points in a 54-33 win over Serra and 19 in a 71-57 win over Bellarmine as Mitty improved to 10-2, 2-0.

Sophia Askew-Goncalves, Oakland Tech basketball: Askew-Gonzalves has been one of the best players on the defending Division III state champions. Askew-Goncalvez had 19 points against Millenium in the Nike Tournament of Champions. She scored 10 points in Tech’s dominant 70-45 Tuesday win over San Ramon Valley. 

Addie Bailey, Acalanes soccer: Bailey scored a brace in Acalanes’ 2-0 win over Alhambra last week. According to stats imputed into MaxPreps, she had six goals and dished out nine assists for Acalanes last season. 

Kylie Cowen, Piedmont Hills soccer: The junior midfielder showed her ability to pass the ball in Piedmont Hills’ two wins last week. Cowen assisted on five of the team’s 11 goals in victories against Mt. Pleasant and Silver Creek. 

Snowe De Leon, Mount Pleasant basketball: The sophomore put up a pair of impressive double-doubles last week. In a 38-28 win over Yerba Buena, Snowe scored 28 and grabbed 15 boards. And in a 52-34 win against San Jose, she went for 25-11 and did not play in the fourth quarter.

Laila Edris, Mountain View soccer: Edris notched two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over Homestead. She then repeated that stat line in a 9-1 victory against Palo Alto. Through only nine matches, Edris has already equaled last season’s total of 10 goals.

Tali Fa’i, Newark Memorial basketball: Fa’i averaged 18 points and nine rebounds in three games at the Newark Optimist Club Holiday tournament in late December. The senior scored 16, 24 and 15 points in three games last week, and Newark Memorial went 2-1. 

Kimberly Rubio, Ygnacio Valley soccer: Rubio was unstoppable in Ygnacio Valley’s 14-0 win against Mount Diablo. The freshman forward scored six goals, and also assisted on a teammate’s goal. 

Ava Uhrich, Pinewood basketball: The transfer from Burlingame made an immediate impact in Pinewood’s upset win over No. 3 Salesian. She  scored 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out three assists in her first game for Pinewood. The senior averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds per game last season.

McKenna Woliczko, Archbishop Mitty basketball: The Monarchs’ freshman sensation continued her run of phenomenal play in Mitty’s 72-37 win over St. Ignatius. She led the team with 21 points. During the Nike Tournament of Champions in December, Woliczko averaged 24 points and 15 rebounds per game.

Karen Xin, Menlo School basketball: The sophomore guard outscored the opposing team by herself when she poured in 25 points in Menlo School’s 51-23 win over El Camino. Xin connected on three three-pointers and made all four of her free throws.

Benicia soccer player Nicholas Ruiz is the Bay Area News Group’s boys high school athlete of the week for Dec. 12-17 after he had received 39.22% of the vote at the 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday.

Dublin basketball player Mehki Thomas (36.72) finished second and Santa Teresa basketball player Adam Nakai (10.80%) took third.

Ruiz, a senior, scored two goals to lift his team to a 3-2 non-league victory over Armijo. He began this week leading the team with five goals and four assists as Benicia had won five of its seven matches.

James Lick soccer player Deanna Luna is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week for Dec. 12-17 after she had received 25.60% of the vote at the 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday.

Oakland Tech basketball player Mari Somvichian (21.10) finished second and Piedmont Hills soccer player Samantha Wallace (18.83%) took third.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Luna, a senior, scored four goals and gave out one assist in a 6-2 win over Oak Grove. The striker made the most of her chances, as she only had six attempted shots on goal the entire match.

On to the nominees:

Taj Gil, James Logan soccer: The senior had three goals and three assists as the Colts breezed past Irvington 10-0 in Mission Valley Athletic League play. He also had a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over Mission San Jose as James Logan improved to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Jonah Guardino, Archbishop Mitty soccer: Facing the Bay Area News Group’s top-ranked team on the road, the sophomore came off the bench and scored in the 84th minute on a counterattack to lift the 13th-ranked Monarchs to a 1-0 victory over De La Salle.

Kellen Hampton, Moreau Catholic basketball: The 6-foot-7 sophomore scored 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting and had 13 rebounds as Moreau cruised past James Logan 89-68 in Mission Valley Athletic League play. Hampton is averaging 21.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Mariners improved to 4-2, 2-0.

Seiichi Naddy, Concord wrestling: Finished first in the 160-pound classification of the 14th Bill Martell Invitational at Northgate, edging Max Bantiuc of Las Lomas 6-5 in the final.

Adam Nakai, Santa Teresa basketball: The junior guard filled up the stat sheet in an 86-79 victory over Alisal, finishing with 29 points on 13-of-20 shooting, five rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks. Santa Teresa ended the week 5-4 on the season. Nakai is averaging 18.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Kevin Romo, Richmond soccer: Helped the Oilers improve to 2-0 in Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division play, scoring two goals in the second half as Richmond beat St. Mary’s-Berkeley 2-0. The Oilers began this week with a 3-1 overall record.

Nicholas Ruiz, Benicia soccer: In a 3-2 non-league victory over Armijo, the senior scored two goals. He leads his team in scoring with five goals and four assists. Benicia began this week with a 5-2 record.

Jon Taylor, The King’s Academy basketball: The senior guard scored 35 points as the Knights rolled past Independence 79-43 in the first round of the Fremont-Sunnyvale tournament. In the final, he led the way with 22 points as TKA defeated Fremont 71-55 to improve to 10-0.

Mehki Thomas, Dublin basketball: He was named the MVP of the Don Nelson Classic at Dublin after he finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead the Gaels past previously undefeated Placer 63-47 in the championship game. Dublin improved to 8-3.

Tariq Weiser, Bellarmine basketball: Scored 25 points to lead the Bells to a 78-73 victory over Sacred Heart Prep at the DJ Frandsen tournament on Saturday at Bellarmine. The win improved the Bells’ record to 3-2.

On to the nominees:

Ashanti Dias, Archbishop Riordan basketball: Dias continued her torrid start to the season by scoring 16 against University and 21 against Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep. The junior scored in double-figures in seven of her first eight games.

Melissa Esquivel, Hayward soccer: In a match where the Farmers collected 14 goals, Esquivel was the most prolific scorer in Hayward’s blowout win over San Lorenzo. Esquivel netted five goals to lead the team in that statistic. 

Deanna Luna, James Lick soccer: The Comets breezed past Oak Grove 6-2 thanks to a four-goal, one-assist night from Luna. Luna made the most of her chances, as she only had six attempted shots on goal the entire match. 

Julysil Paycoan, Del Mar basketball: The point guard played a well-rounded game against Leigh on Tuesday, scoring 13 points while also giving out five assists. That kind of game has not been rare for Paycoan, who is averaging over five assists according to stats on MaxPreps. 

NyEla Pete, College Park basketball: Pete put up back-to-back double-doubles last week. She had 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 60-50 win over Irvington, and then went for 10 points and 14 boards in the next 60-52 win over Dougherty Valley. Pete is also a standout in water polo.

Roya Rezaee, Menlo School soccer: Rezaee’s goal with 17 minutes left in the match broke a scoreless deadlock with Lincoln and won her Knights the Firebird Classic. Menlo School also had wins over Palo Alto, Gunn and Homestead on its way to a trophy. 

Christabel Rodas, De Anza soccer: Rodas found the back of the net three times in a 9-0 win over Kennedy, and she also assisted on three other goals too. While Rodas did not repeat the hat trick in an 8-1 win over Bethel, she did score one goal while also giving out four assists. 

Mari Somvichian, Oakland Tech basketball: Oakland Tech’s senior guard shot an efficient 4-5 from the field to get her 12 points in a blowout win over St. Mary’s-Berkeley. The captain had two three-pointers, as well as a couple of steals on the defensive side of the ball. 

 Asha Walker, American basketball: Walker was a combined 5-8 from three-point land in games against Newark Memorial and California. That torrid shooting from deep helped her score 19 and then 13 points. Walker also grabbed 10 rebounds to give her a double-double against California. 

Samantha Wallace, Piedmont Hills soccer: The Piedmont Hills captain was unstoppable in a 5-0 win over Milpitas. She scored twice, and also was the assister on two other Pirates goals in the dominant win.
