Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) Girls Athlete of the Week poll.
For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.
This week, we consider performances from Jan. 2-7.
Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Winners are announced each Friday online and, starting Sept. 30, in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.
We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.
On to the nominees:
Sophia Askew-Goncalves, Oakland Tech basketball: Askew-Gonzalves has been one of the best players on the defending Division III state champions. Askew-Goncalvez had 19 points against Millenium in the Nike Tournament of Champions. She scored 10 points in Tech’s dominant 70-45 Tuesday win over San Ramon Valley.
Addie Bailey, Acalanes soccer: Bailey scored a brace in Acalanes’ 2-0 win over Alhambra last week. According to stats imputed into MaxPreps, she had six goals and dished out nine assists for Acalanes last season.
Kylie Cowen, Piedmont Hills soccer: The junior midfielder showed her ability to pass the ball in Piedmont Hills’ two wins last week. Cowen assisted on five of the team’s 11 goals in victories against Mt. Pleasant and Silver Creek.
Snowe De Leon, Mount Pleasant basketball: The sophomore put up a pair of impressive double-doubles last week. In a 38-28 win over Yerba Buena, Snowe scored 28 and grabbed 15 boards. And in a 52-34 win against San Jose, she went for 25-11 and did not play in the fourth quarter.
Laila Edris, Mountain View soccer: Edris notched two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over Homestead. She then repeated that stat line in a 9-1 victory against Palo Alto. Through only nine matches, Edris has already equaled last season’s total of 10 goals.
Tali Fa’i, Newark Memorial basketball: Fa’i averaged 18 points and nine rebounds in three games at the Newark Optimist Club Holiday tournament in late December. The senior scored 16, 24 and 15 points in three games last week, and Newark Memorial went 2-1.
Kimberly Rubio, Ygnacio Valley soccer: Rubio was unstoppable in Ygnacio Valley’s 14-0 win against Mount Diablo. The freshman forward scored six goals, and also assisted on a teammate’s goal.
Ava Uhrich, Pinewood basketball: The transfer from Burlingame made an immediate impact in Pinewood’s upset win over No. 3 Salesian. She scored 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out three assists in her first game for Pinewood. The senior averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds per game last season.
McKenna Woliczko, Archbishop Mitty basketball: The Monarchs’ freshman sensation continued her run of phenomenal play in Mitty’s 72-37 win over St. Ignatius. She led the team with 21 points. During the Nike Tournament of Champions in December, Woliczko averaged 24 points and 15 rebounds per game.
Karen Xin, Menlo School basketball: The sophomore guard outscored the opposing team by herself when she poured in 25 points in Menlo School’s 51-23 win over El Camino. Xin connected on three three-pointers and made all four of her free throws.
