Reproductive justice fundraiser
Two San Jose venues are hosting staged readings of the pro-choice play “When She Became Me,” written by Elizabeth Horab. The readings will be held on Jan. 13 and 20 to raise funds for the Oakland-based nonprofit Access Reproductive Justice.
“When She Became Me” is being directed by playwright and San Jose State University lecturer Teresa Veramendi. The play uses real stories to demystify the shared experiences of pregnancy termination, and to offer a wide range of reasons and reactions from people who have experienced it.
Both readings are taking place just prior to Jan. 22, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. The script has been updated for 2022-23, with new interviews responding to the decision’s overturning.
The Jan. 13 reading is set for the San Jose Woman’s Club, 75 S. 11th St., while the Jan. 20 event will be held at Urban Sanctuary, 80 S. Fifth St. Both readings start at 7 p.m.
Although the readings are free to the public, donations are welcome to https://www.gofundme.com/f/when-she-became-me-reading-and-fundraiser. For more information, call 347-272-0875.
