Whether they’re biking Oregon’s trails, hiking Kauai’s Napali Coast or cruising the United Kingdom, our readers have been having adventures near and far in recent months. Now they’re sharing their travels and offering tips on what to see and do along the way, so you can go, too.
Today, we’re headed to Vienna for a tour of the city’s cultural treasures.
AUSTRIA: Concord’s Young family — Jimmy, Jim and Jane, behind the camera — are recently back from Vienna, where they enjoyed the historical and cultural sites along the Ringstrasse. “One of the grandest and most beautiful sites was the Kunsthistoriches Museum (pictured), a palatial fine arts museum crowned by an octagonal dome,” Jane says. “In addition to the paintings, sculptures and artifacts, there was an exhibit of Around the World in 80 Coins. The museum provides a pictorial brochure with a self-guided walking tour of highlights that makes viewing an easy, satisfying and rewarding pleasure.”
TRAVEL TIPS: “Plan at least one full day to explore. We walked a loop around Ringstrasse, starting and ending at the same underground station, U1 Stephansplatz. Get more Mozart chocolate than you think you will want, as it is hard to find and is more expensive to buy here in the States. We also stopped by Time Travel Vienna. Though some guides view it as a tourist gimmick, we were glad to have made that visit our first, as the various shows (some virtual reality) provide a comprehensive history of Austria in an entertaining way that enhanced rest of our touring. If you have any extra time outside Vienna, the Schönbrunn Palace is a worthy visit and is easily accessible by underground train.”
