California lawmakers call for Dana White’s ouster at UFC after slapping wife on video https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/10/california-lawmakers-call-for-dana-whites-ouster-at-ufc-after-slapping-wife-on-video/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/10/california-lawmakers-call-for-dana-whites-ouster-at-ufc-after-slapping-wife-on-video/#respond Tue, 10 Jan 2023 21:11:59 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/?p=8711476&preview=true&preview_id=8711476 The California Women’s Caucus called Monday for UFC president Dana White to be removed from his leadership role in the wake of him striking his wife.

White was seen on video released last week by TMZ slapping his wife, Anne, while the two were on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last month.

In an open letter to Ari Emmanuel, the CEO of Endeavor, the company that owns UFC, the caucus wrote: “Every day that Mr. White’s actions go unaccounted for, your silence becomes more piercing and troubling.”

Endeavor, UFC and Emmanuel have not publicly commented on the incident since the video surfaced.

The letter was signed by caucus chairperson State Sen. Nancy Skinner, who represents the East Bay’s 7th District, and vice chair Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, who represents the 4th Assembly District that encompasses much of Wine Country. Both are Democrats but the caucus is bipartisan.

“Mr. White is not only the external face of the UFC, he is the leader who sets the expectations for the athletes as well,” the letter read. “He is the leader who has explained in years past that he stands firmly against domestic violence. If an athlete were to commit violence against their partner, Mr. White is the leader within UFC who will have to determine the consequence.”

White told TMZ in an interview last week that he was “embarrassed” and concerned for how his three children were affected.

“You’ve heard me say for years, ‘There’s never ever an excuse for a guy to put his hands on a woman,’ and now here I am on TMZ talking about it,” White told the website.

UFC spokesman Chris Costello said last week that neither the organization nor White would issue a statement to The Associated Press. Costello referred to White’s comments to TMZ.

The video shows the couple arguing before Anne White slaps her husband, who slaps back before others intervene.

“Dana and I have been married for almost 30 years,” Anne White said in a statement to TMZ. “To say this is out of character for him is an understatement — nothing like this has ever happened before. Unfortunately, we were both drinking too much on New Year’s Eve and things got out of control on both sides. We’ve talked this through as a family and apologized to each other. I just hope people will respect our privacy for the sake of our kids.”

TBS and UFC, which were set to premiere Dana White’s ill-timed new Power Slap League on Wednesday, have postponed the debut of that venture until Jan. 18.

Rising MMA star Victoria Lee dies at 18 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/09/rising-mma-star-victoria-lee-dies-at-18/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/09/rising-mma-star-victoria-lee-dies-at-18/#respond Mon, 09 Jan 2023 18:52:51 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/?p=8710016&preview=true&preview_id=8710016 By Ben Church | CNN

Victoria Lee, one of the brightest new stars in mixed martial arts (MMA), has died at the age of 18, her sister confirmed.

“She has gone too soon and our family has been completely devastated since then,” her sister Angela said in an Instagram post Saturday. “We miss her. More than anything in this world. Our family will never be the same. Life will never be the same.”

Lee was born and raised in Hawaii and had started rising through the ranks of the sport. She won three fights in her short career, most recently in September 2021 against Victoria Souza.

She put fighting on the back burner last year as she focused on graduating from high school.

In her Instagram post, Angela said her sister had died on Dec. 26 but did not say how.

“We miss you so much sis. More than you could ever realize. We’re all broken,” Angela added. “Because a piece of you was in each of us and when you left, those pieces were ripped out of us. We will never be the same.”

Lee came from a family with a rich history in the sport — her sister and brother, Christian, are both ONE world champions.

“The Prodigy,” as she had become known, had previously told MMA Fighting that her siblings were her biggest inspiration.

The ONE Championship, a promotion that Lee fought in, said it was “devastated” about the news.

“I am heartbroken by Victoria Lee’s passing. I first met Victoria when she was 11 years old. I watched her blossom over the years as a martial artist and a human being,” ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong said in a Facebook post.

“I always remember thinking how wise, thoughtful, and selfless she was beyond her years.

“Of course, she was an extraordinary martial arts prodigy even back then, but I could see that she was so much more than that.”

Cain Velasquez splits from celebrity attorney Mark Geragos for shooting trial https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/04/cain-velasquez-splits-from-celebrity-attorney-for-prospective-shooting-trial/ https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/01/04/cain-velasquez-splits-from-celebrity-attorney-for-prospective-shooting-trial/#respond Wed, 04 Jan 2023 22:11:48 +0000 https://www.eastbaytimes.com/?p=8706011&preview=true&preview_id=8706011 SAN JOSE — Former mixed-martial arts fighter Cain Velasquez will no longer be backed in court by celebrity attorney Mark Geragos, opting for a local attorney to lead his defense against attempted murder and other charges set for trial after he allegedly chased then shot at a man accused of molesting his child.

Cain Velasquez appears for his arraignment at the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, in San Jose, Calif. Velasquez, the former UFC champion based out of San Jose, was charged with shooting at a man accused of molesting his child. (Dai Sugano/Bay Area News Group)

Until his preliminary examination this past fall, Velasquez had been represented by a high-profile legal team led by Geragos and partnered with San Jose-based defense attorney Renee Hessling.

Velasquez appeared in a San Jose courtroom Wednesday to affirm that Hessling alone would represent him going forward. He is scheduled to next appear in court March 8.

Hints of a defense change surfaced at a November arraignment in which attorney Edward Sousa made a special appearance for Velasquez. Sousa mentioned Hessling but not Geragos or Alexandra Kazarian, who had also been part of the defense team up to that point.

Hessling did not offer any comment on the counsel change after Wednesday’s hearing, and the Geragos firm did not immediately comment in response to an inquiry from the Bay Area News Group.

For most of the year, Geragos aggressively advocated for Velasquez to be released from jail custody with bail and supervision conditions. He prevailed in November after initially being rebuffed by county Superior Court Judge Shelyna Brown and the Sixth District Court of Appeal.

The charges against Velasquez were greenlit for trial after a preliminary examination; Judge Arthur Bocanegra granted him $1 million bail and monitored release, and later approved his travel to an out-of-state wrestling event since it fell under Velasquez’s employment as a professional fighter.

Velasquez is charged with shooting at 44-year-old Harry Goularte Jr. as he traveled with his mother Patricia Goularte and his stepfather Paul Bender, who were reportedly driving him from Morgan Hill to San Jose on Feb. 28 to get fitted for an ankle monitor at a county office. Bender was wounded in the encounter, which happened after a protracted car chase.

Three days earlier, Goularte Jr. was arraigned on a felony charge of a lewd and lascivious act with a child, based on claims that he abused Velasquez’s son at a San Martin home daycare run by his mother. Goularte Jr. was granted supervised release over the objection of prosecutors.

Velasquez faces up to life in prison if he’s convicted of the charges. Geragos indicated in previous court filings that Velasquez suffered impulse control issues and brain injuries from his mixed-martial arts career, which includes two UFC heavyweight title belts while fighting out of San Jose.

Velasquez’s defense to this point suggested they would proxy litigate the sexual-assault charge against Goularte Jr., on the premise that Velasquez was taking action after the criminal-justice system failed his family. Velasquez is also suing Goularte Jr. and his parents for the alleged sexual abuse; progress of the lawsuit has been paused pending the criminal case.
